President John Dramani Mahama has directed a major expansion in recruitment into Ghana’s security services, increasing the intake target from 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over the next four years.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, the directive followed a high-level meeting chaired by the President with heads of the country’s security agencies, alongside the Minister for the Interior and the Acting Minister for Defence, to review the ongoing recruitment process.
After receiving a briefing on the exercise, President Mahama ordered that the number of men and women enlisted into the various security services be doubled to strengthen the nation’s security architecture and improve manpower across the agencies.
The President also instructed the leadership of the security institutions to ensure that the recruitment process is conducted with transparency and fairness.
Officials who attended the meeting included the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the President, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and the National Security Coordinator, as well as heads of the major security institutions such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
The expansion is expected to significantly increase opportunities for applicants seeking to join Ghana’s security services while addressing staffing needs across the various agencies.
