The Ghana Education Service (GES) Central Regional Directorate has ordered the immediate suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 22, 2026, the directorate said the decision follows reports of violent incidents during recent competitions.
The GES letter expressed deep concern over the developments, noting that the incidents had “disrupted the spirit of healthy competition and posed serious threats to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators.”
It continued to state that; “Management of the Regional Education Directorate has received credible reports of grave incidents of violence and clashes among students of competing schools during the recent zonal athletics competitions.
“These unfortunate occurrences have not only disrupted the spirit of healthy competition but have also posed serious threats to the safety and well- being of students, staff, and spectators.”
The statement, signed by the Regional Director of Education, Juliette Dufie Otami, and addressed to all heads of Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region, said the directive aims to safeguard lives and preserve the integrity of sporting activities.
The director described the directive as temporary, allowing school management to assess the situation and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“This temporary measure is intended to enable management to undertake a thorough review of the prevailing situation, deliberate extensively with relevant stakeholders, and develop appropriate strategies and preventive mechanisms to forestall any recurrence of such violent incidents in our school sports,” it added.
The statement further directed that school heads with immediate effect must;
1. Immediately suspend all planned or scheduled zonal inter-school athletics competitions.
2. Communicate this directive promptly to staff, students, and relevant stakeholders.
3. Ensure strict compliance within your respective institutions.

The directive follows viral videos, widely shared over the weekend, showing students from two senior high schools in the Central Region physically assaulting one another in separate incidents.
Meanwhile, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the violent act.
