Separate probe ongoing into Ofori-Atta with ‘mind-blowing’ findings – AG Ayine

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has confirmed that investigations separate from the SML case into the activities of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, are ongoing.

According to him, the probe involves both local and foreign investigators tracking offshore dealings linked to the former minister.

Speaking on JoyNews on January 10, 2026, the Attorney General disclosed that the investigation is still at an early stage and has not yet reached any conclusions.

“… I started investigating Ofori-Atta. In fact, in this case, I’m doing it with some foreign investigators who are tracking all the offshore dealings and so on. And then we are also doing our own investigations here. They are inconclusive, as we speak,” he said.

Dr Ayine emphasised that the current probe is separate from other high-profile investigations previously associated with the former finance minister.

Though he did not provide any details regarding the investigations, he described them as ‘potentially mind-blowing.’

“It’s different, totally different [from the SML investigations] and potentially mind-blowing, but I will not give any details at this point in time,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the SML case involving Ofori-Atta and other accused persons, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, whose office is investigating the matter, outlined the genesis of SML, which he described as essentially a vehicle for using “public office for private benefit,” allegedly championed by the former finance minister.

In November 2025, the OSP said that investigations into the SML contract showed that the original name of the company was Strategic Mobilisation Enhancement Limited (SMEL), which was set up on February 14, 2017, just three weeks after Ofori-Atta was made finance minister, and not long after the New Patriotic Party won the 2016 presidential election.

He said that the company, which was incorporated by one Evans Adusei, was first presented to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for a sole-source contract as “a service provider for enhanced classification, valuation, and risk management platform in the customs set-up.”

He asserted that even though Ken Ofori-Atta was not named in the books of SMEL, he was the brain behind the outfit.
