Speaking on the Nyansapo Fie show on Plan B 104.5 FM, Principal Health Promotion Officer at the Tema Urban Hospital, Mrs. Jemima Ohene educated the public on Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis (AHC), popularly known as Apolo.
She explained that AHC is a highly contagious viral eye infection, noting that once one person becomes infected, it is easy for others around them to also contract the disease. According to her, the infection spreads through direct or indirect contact with an infected person, adding that the condition is often seasonal and commonly occurs during dry weather periods.
Mrs. Ohene highlighted key signs and symptoms of Apolo, including redness of the eyes, eye swelling, pain, and excessive tearing. She added that the infection typically lasts between one and two weeks.
She concluded by advising the public to practise regular handwashing with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection and encouraged anyone who develops symptoms to report to a health facility promptly for proper care.
