An NDC communicator for the Ashaiman constituency, George Asabre, has cautioned that Ghana risks serious food shortages if the country prematurely halts rice importation.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, he argued that Ghana currently consumes far more rice than it produces, making importation a necessary measure to meet national demand. According to him, any abrupt ban on rice imports would be “suicidal,” as the local industry is not yet strong enough to supply the country’s needs.
Mr. Asabre explained that it is for this reason that President Mahama is prioritizing support for local farmers, providing them with the tools and resources needed to significantly scale up production. He added that with the right systems, policies, and investments in place, Ghana can progressively reduce rice imports without putting the population at risk.
He stressed that a well-planned transition—rather than an immediate ban—is what will ensure food security and long-term sustainability in the agricultural sector
