The General Secretary of the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana, Samuel Aggrey, has expressed concern over the continuous increase in electricity tariffs, describing it as a major challenge to businesses and the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, Mr. Aggrey revealed that from 2022 to 2024, electricity tariffs have increased by 236%, adding that under the PR system, tariffs rise every three months without any reductions. He said the high cost of electricity is overburdening citizens and businesses, making ECG appear to be a “lucrative business” controlled by successive governments for their own interests.
According to him, the 24-hour economy cannot be efficient if the cost of electricity and taxes remain too high, as this will increase production costs and reduce consumer demand. He urged the government to take immediate steps to review the tariff system to make power affordable for businesses.
Mr. Aggrey also alleged that corruption within the transmission system contributes to the high cost of power and called on authorities to address the issue to support industrial growth and protect local enterprises.
