Richard Anning, a communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema Central constituency, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with Ghana’s mining and land ownership laws, describing them as “useless” and unfair to local landowners.
Speaking on Nkosuo Nsem, Mr. Anning lamented that under current laws, individuals and families who own farmlands lose ownership rights once gold or other minerals are discovered on their lands. “My family lands that we use for farming are mine, but immediately gold is discovered in the land, then it no longer belongs to me — it becomes government property. Meanwhile, people in Accra are giving out concessions on someone’s land. How can you do this?” he questioned.
Mr. Anning emphasized that the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, should not be approached from partisan perspectives. According to him, both the NPP and NDC have failed to provide a lasting solution because the issue has become politicized. “We don’t need an NDC or NPP approach to end galamsey. We need to sit as a nation, create a national system, and follow through with it whether the government changes or not,” he stated.
