The Ashanti Regional Constituency Chairmen’s Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a night vigil scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026, in solidarity with the party’s incarcerated Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

The vigil, themed “Light of Unity,” will take place from 6pm to 9pm at the party’s campaign office in Asokwa, a day ahead of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional executive elections scheduled for August 15.

Organisers said the vigil is intended to show solidarity with Wontumi, whom the caucus believes has been treated unjustly, and to honour what it described as his leadership of the party in the Ashanti Region.

Chairman Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence following his conviction in an illegal mining case linked to Akonta Mining Company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

Since his conviction, sections of the NPP, particularly within the Ashanti Region, have staged prayer sessions, solidarity visits, and public statements backing him.

Posters advertising the vigil have already gone up across the region, with supporters, some wearing branded “Team Wontumi” shirts, seen rallying ahead of the event.
