A man known only as Edem has been arrested for unlawfully extorting money by posing as an agent of Interpol and the BNI.
Edem has allegedly been operating from Tema Harbour. After a luxury vehicle is cleared and leaves the port, he reportedly sends photos and videos of the vehicle to his accomplices, who then intercept the car, falsely claiming it to be stolen.
Victims of this scheme are coerced into paying sums ranging from Ghc 25,000 to Ghc 50,000 before they can reclaim their vehicles.
On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Edem’s scheme unravelled when he attempted to apply the same tactics on a newly cleared luxury car at Tema port.
The victim, confident that his vehicle was not stolen, summoned security personnel who confronted the alleged FBI and Interpol agent.
Questioned by authorities, Edem was unable to provide any form of identification that verified his claims of being a BNI officer or working with Interpol.
Edem is now in police custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Many people who have cleared luxury vehicles at TEMA port have fallen prey to Edem, losing significant amounts of money just to secure their cars.
