Kpone Okpogli Youth Threaten Court Action Against TDC Over Land Disputes

Kpone Okpogli Youth Threaten Court Action Against TDC Over Land Disputes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Kpone Okpogli Youth Association has threatened to drag the Tema Development Company (TDC) Limited to court over unresolved land disputes within the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.

On Tuesday, September 16, the group staged a protest dubbed the “Enough is Enough Demo” to highlight grievances over poor road infrastructure, water challenges, and lingering boundary conflicts.

The association has given TDC a 21-day ultimatum to address the land issues or face legal action.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Chairman of the Association, Emmanuel Clifford Anum-Doku, accused TDC of mismanaging lands meant for the development of Kpone. He alleged that parcels of land allocated to TDC were instead ceded to communities in Tema New Town, fuelling tensions.

“Our lands were given to TDC for development purposes, and they are taking care of the entire land of Kpone. TDC took part of the lands and gave them to the Tema new town people. If Tema new town people are fighting with us, TDC should intervene. But now TDC is not doing anything, and they want the two parties to fight,” he emphasised.

Mr. Anum-Doku further claimed that TDC had encroached beyond its mandate. He explained that their decision to resort to the courts followed what they described as an unsatisfactory response from TDC to a letter they had earlier submitted.

“We have realised that what was given to TDC is not what TDC has taken. It’s taken beyond its boundary. Prampram is claiming most of our lands. Meanwhile, TDC knew that during the acquisition agreement, the government didn’t take any land from Prampram. TDC is sitting down, looking at us.

“They think that we don’t know what is going on, so we, the people of Kpone and Okpogli Youth Association, say we have seen it and we know how to tackle it. We gave TDC a letter and the reply they gave us; we prefer to take TDC to court,” he stated.

He also expressed frustration over the poor state of roads in the area.

“We’re talking about the inner roads of Kpone township, the Mandela road and the road linking to the barrier. Our roads are very bad. We’ve been protesting for so long, and we met the former MCE, who gave us some assurances and the current MCE we have met several times with.

“And he also gave us some assurances, but we see nothing going on. That is why we protested on this issue,” he said.
