The Accra Circuit Court has imposed a fine of GH¢6,000 each on eight (8) persons who have been found guilty of assault in the violence that occurred during the recent re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The convicts were arrested and charged for assaulting former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson; New Patriotic Party (NPP) Deputy Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei; and trader Majeed Mohammed Saana during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun on July 11, 2025.
The incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station, where the accused attacked the victims without provocation.
The presiding judge, His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday August 29, 2025, ordered Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.
The court had earlier convicted the 8 after they all pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, presenting the facts of the case during hearing, explained that on June 11, 2025, the complainants, all members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were visiting polling stations during the Ablekuma North election rerun.
Upon arriving at the Methodist Church Polling Station, Hawa Koomson and Majeed Mohammed Saana were attacked and assaulted by the accused.
After security personnel rescued them, the group proceeded to assault Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, who was also present at the polling station, without any apparent provocation.
The victims were subsequently taken to the Odorkor Police Station and the Regional CID/AR, where they formally lodged assault complaints.
The police issued medical forms to the complainants, who sought treatment at a hospital.
Following investigations, the accused were arrested, though they initially denied the allegations in their caution statements.
They were later charged and brought before the court, where they admitted their guilt.
The Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun was triggered by irregularities in the December 2024 general election.
Disputes over results from 19 out of 281 polling stations, involving 6,839 voters, led to a High Court-ordered re-run after challenges from the NPP and NDC.
The election, marked by violence, including assaults on Mavis Hawa Koomson and others, saw NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn win with 34,090 votes against NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie’s 33,881, ending the NPP’s long hold on the seat.
