A tragic head-on collision between a VIP bus and a cargo truck has claimed multiple lives and left dozens of travelers hospitalized on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, June 25, near Oframase, close to Nkawkaw in the Kwahu West Municipality.

According to initial reports, a VIP bus with registration number GR-2399 collided with an oncoming cargo truck loaded with flour. The impact of the crash resulted in several fatalities, with some bodies reportedly mutilated beyond recognition.

Emergency teams, including personnel from the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), responded swiftly to the scene. Both vehicles have since been towed to restore traffic flow on the busy highway.

Many of the injured have been admitted to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and other nearby health facilities, where they are receiving treatment.

Authorities are yet to release an official death toll, citing the condition of the bodies as a challenge to accurate identification and counting.

While the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, several road users have blamed the deteriorating state of the highway, pointing specifically to the numerous potholes along the stretch that have contributed to recent accidents.

The Ghana Police Service and the Kwahu West Municipal Fire Department are expected to issue an official report on the incident in the coming days.
