Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T. Ackaah-Boafo has firmly denounced child marriage, stressing the crucial role that education and legal reforms must play in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups, especially young girls.
During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Justice Ackaah-Boafo emphasized that every girl deserves the chance to pursue education and unlock her full potential. He described forced child marriage as entirely unacceptable and a clear violation of these rights.
“The girl child deserves the opportunity to be educated and nurture her talents. Forcing a child into marriage against her will is definitely a no-no,” he asserted.
He also addressed the ongoing issue of witchcraft accusations, questioning their place in a modern, globalized world. He called for a careful reevaluation of the criteria used to make such damaging claims.
“In this day and age, why are we still discussing witchcraft? We must critically examine how such accusations are made,” he said.
Justice Ackaah-Boafo reaffirmed his stance against harmful practices that infringe on the rights of children and women. He advocated for a combination of education and proper legal measures to tackle these challenges.
“I strongly believe children should not be married off at a young age. Every child should be allowed to develop their abilities. If laws are needed to enforce this, I support them wholeheartedly, but education is just as important as legislation,” he concluded.
