The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has called off its planned strike, following discussions with the government over the postponement of the GH¢1 fuel levy.
Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Moro Ibrahim, said the decision came after the government postponed the commencement of the GH¢1 fuel levy to June 16, 2025.
“We have decided to call off the strike based on discussions we had with representatives,” he said.
It is recalled that on June 5, 2025, Parliamentapproved the Energy Sector Levy Bill into law, introducing a GH¢1 levy on each liter of fuel to address the ongoing power crisis and rescue Ghana’s heavily indebted energy sector.
The GPRTU expressed strong opposition to the move, threatening a nationwide strike if the government did not withdraw the levy before Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Despite the backlash, President John Mahama defended the decision, acknowledging its difficulty but stressing its necessity for the country’s energy future.
In the latest development, the GPRTU has decided to hold off on the strike, stating that “we will monitor the situation and give the government until June 16 before taking any further action.”
