Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has withdrawn from the race for the party’s National Chairman position.
In a statement dated August 24, 2026, Mr. Boasiako said the decision followed “many nights of prayer, sober reflection” and consultations with his family, legal team, party elders, campaign team and trusted supporters.
He explained that his current circumstances could become an additional burden on the party at a time when the NPP is focused on rebuilding following its electoral defeat.
“This is not the decision my heart desired, but sometimes, true love requires us to release what we deeply want in order to protect what we love even more,” he said.
Wontumi thanked his supporters, campaign team, constituency and regional executives, Members of Parliament, former government appointees, communicators and other party activists for their support throughout his campaign.
He, however, stressed that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as surrender, maintaining that he remains committed to the pursuit of truth and justice.
He also appealed to his supporters not to attack other NPP members or abandon the party because of his personal circumstances.
Wontumi urged party members to remain loyal to the NPP and rally behind its leader, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he said needed the “prayers, loyalty and total support” of party members to rebuild the party and lead it back to victory.
“My present circumstances may prevent me from standing before you physically, but they cannot imprison my love for the NPP. They cannot imprison my faith. They cannot imprison the truth. And they can never imprison the will of God,” he stated.
His withdrawal now brings an end to his bid to lead the party as National Chairman, as the NPP prepares for its internal reorganisation and the battle ahead.
