The management of Lakeside Estate has pushed back against reports suggesting that the entire estate was submerged during the torrential rains that hit Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025, clarifying that the flooding was localized and not widespread across the residential enclave.
In a press statement issued on Monday, May 19, Lakeside Estate disputed media reports describing them as misleading.
“It was actually the bridge connecting Community Five and Community Six that overflowed due to the adjacent stream bursting its banks. The flooding spread to parts of the Madina Institute of Technology and homes near the university bridge—not the entire Lakeside Estate,” the statement explained.
Management further attributed the flooding to the construction of a Star Oil filling station near the bridge, which they claim has significantly narrowed the water passage and impeded the natural flow of stormwater.
“In 2023, we wrote to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the Adentan Municipal Assembly objecting to the siting of the station at the edge of the bridge. However, the NPA in a January 2024 response granted the permit after reviewing the location,” the statement added.
According to the estate’s engineers, the obstruction caused by the fuel station is a major contributor to the flooding observed in Community Five and its environs.
In response to the latest incident, Lakeside Estate has announced a raft of immediate measures, including the desilting of all drains across the estate and renewed appeals to local authorities to reassess the positioning of the fuel station.
“We have issued firm instructions to our Public Works Department to clear all drainage systems. Residents are also being sensitized to regularly clean the gutters in front of their homes to ensure free flow of water,” the company said.
