Body of a young man found floating on Volta Lake near Adomi Bridge

An unidentified young man, believed to be in his 40s, has drowned in the Volta Lake near the Adomi Bridge in Asuogyaman district, Eastern region.

The decomposing body was found floating on the river on February 19, 2025, at around 10:30 a.m. by an Immigration officer on duty at the bridge.

A collaborative effort involving the District Police Commander, Environmental Health Officers, a Military Defense Officer, and local divers led to the retrieval of the body at approximately.

The body of the well-dressed deceased was subsequently transported to the Police Hospital for further investigation and identification.

Drowning incidents are unfortunately common along the Asuogyaman stretch of the Volta Lake, primarily due to recreational and fishing activities in the area.

Globally, drowning remains a significant public health concern.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 300,000 drowning deaths annually worldwide. Drowning disproportionately affects children and young people, with children under the age of 5 accounting for nearly a quarter of all drowning deaths. It is the fourth leading cause of death for children aged 1–4 years and the third leading cause for those aged 5–14 years.

Alarmingly, 92% of drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, underscoring the need for improved water safety measures and public awareness campaigns in these regions.
