A local governance expert, Issaka Amon Kortei, has emphatically stated that he would have canceled Ghana’s Independence Day celebration if he were the President of the Republic.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen show, hosted by Ohene Kinnah on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Amon Kortei described the use of state funds to celebrate Independence Day as a waste, calling it “useless.”
Mr. Kortei emphasized that Ghana is only politically independent but not developmentally independent.
“Ghana is politically independent but not developmentally independent,” he noted.
He further argued that the annual celebration serves as a reminder of the hardships endured by Ghanaians under colonial rule.
“To avoid reminding ourselves of the punishment and suffering our forefathers endured at the hands of colonial masters, Independence Day celebrations should be canceled,” he stated.
He also criticized the practice of making Ghanaian students march under the scorching sun, leading to cases of students and security personnel collapsing from exhaustion.
Amon Kortei added that the funds allocated for the celebration could be better utilized to benefit the country.
“We should focus more on celebrating our traditional festivals rather than wasting national resources on Independence Day celebrations,” he concluded.
