There will be no need for Minority to attend Parliament if we want to exert our powers – Majority Chief Whip

There will be no need for Minority to attend Parliament if we want to exert our powers – Majority Chief Whip

The Majority Chief Whip of Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has advised the Minority to desist from what he describes as petty politicking being engaged in by the caucus.

According to him, the New Patriotic Party caucus, considering their numbers, should not overestimate their influence as against that of the Majority National Democratic Congress.

“We are being taunted by the Minority. They are making all sorts of funny comments, and they make those comments as if they just haven’t left government after 8 years. If we want to exert our powers, there will be no need for any of them to attend Parliament because we will command our numbers; we will do everything in Parliament without recourse to them,” he stated in an interview on TV3.

He underscored that the NDC, despite their commanding numbers in the 9th Parliament, remains interested in engaging and building consensus with the NPP on matters in the interest of the nation.

The NDC gained a significant majority in the 2024 parliamentary election with 183 seats against the NPP’s 88 seats. Four independent candidates in the House have also elected to join the NDC caucus, while one seat remains outstanding.

However, the NPP has on occasion accused the NDC of failing to marshal their numbers to conduct business in the House. On Friday, February 8, 2025, the House was forced to adjourn sitting when the Minority raised the issue of quorum.

You don’t give criminals two weeks to fold up – Ashanti Regional Minister under attack for giving ultimatum to galamseyers

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Amoako Baah, has come under heavy criticism for issuing an ultimatum to illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers, within his jurisdiction to desist from their activities.

Speaking on Saturday, February 8, 2025, edition of Newsfile on Joynews, former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Inusah Fuseini described the action of the minister as indicative of weakness.

“We don’t give criminals time to prepare. If someone defecates in your backyard and you catch them, you don’t give them time to clean it up—you order them to do it immediately,” he stressed.

He noted that the decision to give the illegal miners an ultimatum would render the fight against galamsey less effective, hence the need for the minister to hit the ground running.
