The Deputy Chief Investigator of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice’s (CHRAJ) Tema Sub-Regional Office has underscored the necessity of educating and protecting women’s reproductive rights.
In an interview on the Nyansapɔ Fie programme with hostess Nana Asabea, Uncle Ato, as he is affectionately known, highlighted the importance of respecting women’s autonomy in reproductive health decisions.
Whilst acknowledging the biblical injunction against spouses depriving each other sexually, Uncle Ato cautioned that this should not be used to justify the abuse of women’s reproductive rights.
“Women have the right to choose when to conceive, but often lack the requisite knowledge regarding their reproductive health,” he noted.
Uncle Ato further emphasised the need for men to respect their spouses’ reproductive rights, taking into account not only their faith but also their partner’s autonomy. Moreover, he advocated for spouses to testify against perpetrators of domestic violence, serving as a deterrent to others and preventing escalation.
In conclusion, the CHRAJ’s campaign to empower women on reproductive health rights is a timely initiative. By promoting education and respect for women’s autonomy, it aims to safeguard their reproductive rights and prevent abuse. As Uncle Ato aptly put it, women’s reproductive health rights are fundamental and must be protected.
