President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced the elevation of three districts to metropolitan status and the upgrade of twelve districts to municipalities across Ghana.

This decision, outlined in a letter dated November 5, 2024, and addressed to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, grants executive approval for the changes.

The new metropolises include:

Kpone-Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region, Gomoa East in the Central Region, and Techiman in the Bono East Region.

In addition, the following districts have been elevated to municipalities:

Bole in the Savannah Region, Afigya Kwabre South, Atwima Kwanwoma, Obuasi East, and Sekyere South in the Ashanti Region, Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region, Anloga and South Tongu in the Volta Region, Shama in the Western Region, and Techiman North and Pru East in the Bono East Region.

This reclassification aims to enhance local governance, allowing these areas greater autonomy to address their unique developmental needs.

The upgrades are expected to support efficient service delivery and foster socio-economic growth across the affected regions.
