Organised labour proposes establishment of union government to chart a new course for Ghana

Organised labour has proposed a constitutional amendment for a union government.

According to labour, the union government will foster political stability and economic growth.

A leader of organised labour, Isaac Bampoe Addo said this when he addressed the 12th Quadrennial Conference at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.

Organised labour through its leadership is concerned about the current state of democracy in the country.

It also raised issues about excessive powers in the hands of the president to appoint members of boards and Chief Executive Officers of government agencies.

“In assessing the benefits or otherwise of our current democratic dispensation, account should be taken of the following, namely, the voluntary spirit that is waning, patriotism and selflessness as against ethnocentrism, national cohesion vis a vis ethnocentric governance”.

“Corruption in all forms and indiscipline that has destroyed the fabric of our society, is it not time to consider introducing partnership in the structure of governance in Ghana? Is union government not a better alternative? Let us all begin to ponder over this,” he urged.

In another development, President Akufo-Addo has pledged to uphold the integrity of the upcoming elections.

He spoke about ensuring peace in the upcoming elections.

“We want all citizens and organisations to reject misinformation and disinformation. I will help to have free fair and transparent elections. It is the will of the Ghanaian people to freely express, it is not the will of any political party, however desperate, for power that will prevail, ” the President said.

He promised to ensure Ghana remains peaceful after the elections.

“We have a duty to support our security agencies to prevent any threat to the peace we enjoy. We must work diligently to secure our borders and maintain peace and security during these critical times. I have been and will always pledge for peace,” he assured
