1-teacher, 1-laptop: General Secretary of GNAT gives government 2-week ultimatum to distribute laptops

1-teacher, 1-laptop: General Secretary of GNAT gives government 2-week ultimatum to distribute laptops

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the Ministry of Education a two-week ultimatum to distribute the laptops procured under the ‘1-teacher, 1-laptop’ initiative to teachers.

According to the Union, the delay in distributing the laptop to teachers is creating agitations and anger among members which could mar the peaceful industrial climate.

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko said this in an interview 3news’ Daniel Opoku in Accra on August 12.

In July this year, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum promised to distribute the laptops by August 31.

Mr Tanko appealed to the Minister to abide by the deadline.

“The Minister made the promise to the Labour Commission, we are to go back to the Commission on 29th. We are expecting that when we get there, he will deliver them to the Commission,” he said.

In another development, Mr Tanko expressed concern about high cost of living.

He cited that from January to June this year, fuel price has increased by more than 17%. A bag of cement is currently hovering around GHC100.

The General Secretary called on government to roll out policies to address the situation.

On the upcoming elections, GNAT called on the Electoral Commission to be firm and fair in conducting the elections.

“Therefore, they must let the will of the people be reflected, regardless of who it is, once the people have spoken the same thing should be reflected,” he advised.

The Association also cautioned politicians against hate speech.

“There are other shareholders in the project called Ghana, that they are not the only shareholders in Ghana, so they should be mindful of the way they speak because life and death lie in the power of the tongue,” he cautioned.
