A community durbar turned tragic when Maabena, a 22-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant, mysteriously died during a durbar organized to welcome the Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Martin Agyei Mensah-Korsah Jnr., who also serves as the Minister for Local Government.
The incident, which occurred at Nkwayiso within the Techiman South Constituency, has left the community in mourning and speculation.

The durbar, held on Sunday, June 23, 2024, was meant to be a joyous occasion. According to eyewitnesses, Maabena was enthusiastically dancing with others when she suddenly screamed and ran towards the Chief’s palace. There, she collapsed and lost consciousness. She was quickly transported to the Holy Family Hospital in the official car of the Techiman South Municipal Chief Executive but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her unexpected death has cast a pall over the entire community.
The Nkwayiso community and Techiman South Constituency are rife with rumors and speculations about the circumstances surrounding Maabena’s death. Some residents have linked the tragic event to political tensions, suggesting that the accusations by supporters of the Local Government Minister against the NDC Parliamentary candidate have created a hostile atmosphere. These accusations alleged that the NDC candidate had buried a pregnant woman on the Techiman-Sunyani Road, a claim that many believe was a politically motivated attempt to tarnish the candidate’s reputation.
The sudden and unexplained death of Maabena has heightened these tensions, leading to a climate of suspicion and fear. The community is now calling for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind her demise and to ensure that justice is served.
