The Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) is demanding the total dissolution of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Board to allow competent individuals to manage their pensions.
TUTAG’s call comes after SSNIT terminated the intended sale of 60 percent of its shares in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
The termination of the sale was announced after Organised Labour decided to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, July 15. SSNIT has officially communicated its decision to terminate the process of selling off the hotels to Organised Labour.
In a statement signed by TUTAG’s National President, Prof. Uriah S. Tetteh, he stated that it is insufficient for SSNIT to discontinue the sale of its 60% shares, and therefore, the Board members must be sacked
“It is the view of members of TUTAG that it is insufficient for SSNIT to merely discontinue the process of selling its 60% shares in the four hotels. We believe that in order to move forward in the right direction on this matter, it would be appropriate for the Board to be totally dissolved to allow for more competent individuals who are committed to managing the affairs of our pensions to take over, with labour unions constituting the majority,” TUTAG pointed out.
TUTAG is also demanding an explanation from the Board and Management of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) regarding their sudden reversal of halting the process.
“We also demand an explanation from the Board and Management of the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) on how they initially disapproved and then miraculously approved such an unfortunate sale within a two-week period after halting the process.”
TUTAG has expressed solidarity with Organised Labour’s strike to protest against SSNIT, stating that it will initiate the process of taking appropriate actions on the matter, which will be communicated to the public in due course.
“Following the call by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on all unions and workers associations in the country to declare a nation-wide indefinite strike action to reject the actions of the SSNIT Board of selling 60% of its shares in four hotels, we, the members of the Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG) wish to show solidarity with the TUC on this matter.
“We wish to state that in accordance with the procedures outlined in our Constitution and the Labour Act, Act 651 (2003), our membership will begin the processes of taking appropriate actions on the matter to be communicated to the public in due course.”
