Corrupt officials are like termites eating foundation of our democracy – Togbe Afede

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State in the Volta Region, Togbe Afede XIV, has said corruption undermines the nation’s democracy, as corrupt officials are like termites at the woodwork, eating at the very foundations of democracy.

The Agbogbomefia was speaking at a grand durbar of the 2023 Te Za in the Volta Regional capital, Ho.

The event also marked the 20th anniversary of the enthronement of the Agbogbomefia.

Togbe Afede XIV underscored the effects of corruption on the nation and called on chiefs to join in the fight against corruption.

“Corruption causes leakage in the economy because these are incomes that people earn secretly and they are never taxed.

“It stifles initiatives because it rewards the less deserving and of course it disrupts. Once it leaks our money into private pockets, it disrupts our economic progress and this is what we all have to fight and that’s a responsibility we chiefs must be willing to bear,” he remarked.

He stressed that “corruption leads to divisive politics, tribal politics, winner takes all politics, all of which have been hampering the progress of our nation,” and hence must be tackled.
