Abuakwa South Member of Parliament, Samuel Atta Akyea, has responded to former colleague minister Boakye Agyarko’s allegations that he played a role in Agyarko’s removal as the Energy Minister in 2017.
Agyarko had claimed that Atta Akyea was involved in undermining his efforts in relation to the Ameri Power Plant Agreement renegotiation.
Atta Akyea released a press statement to address these allegations, providing four key points to support his innocence:
- He was not involved in Ameri matters, neither in cabinet deliberations nor in Parliament.
- As the Minister for Works and Housing, he did not influence Parliament to frustrate or defeat Agyarko’s work.
- He did not contact lawyers involved in committee work regarding the Ameri deal renegotiation.
- He did not hold any discussions with Gabby Otchere-Darko or anyone else to override cabinet decisions.
Boakye Agyarko had alleged that some members of the government were unhappy with a renegotiated Ameri deal that he felt was more costly than the original one. He also claimed that Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko renegotiated the deal without the consent of the cabinet committee that was assigned to work on it. Agyarko further stated that Atta Akyea threatened to mobilize Members of Parliament against him when he presented the deal worked on by the committee.
Atta Akyea’s response emphasizes his lack of involvement in the Ameri matters and disputes Agyarko’s version of events. The exchange highlights the internal dynamics and challenges that can arise within political parties and government when dealing with complex policy decisions and negotiations.
