The Tanker Drivers Union which is currently on strike says, among others, they are aggrieved about the placement of Tracking Devices inside their vehicles because it is causing them diseases.
Ghana National Tanker Drivers Association remain on strike and members have parked their trucks in protest of treatment by the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
The Chairman was speaking in an interview on Asempa FM monitored by Plan B News
He said the Tracking device allegedly causes the same kind of sickness (cancer) caused by Telecom Masts.
According to the Chairman of the Union, some of their members who have had encounters with the Tracking Devices have complained about all kinds of sicknesses and diseases as a result of the tracker and they want it removed.
This is according to the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) Tanker Drivers Union chairman Clement Ampadu, who argued that the devices installed in the cars by the government to check theft of fuel is rather causing them personal health harm.
“Tracking devices installed in our tanker cars are making us sick. It is the same as the mast of telecom companies. That is why it is making us sick.
“This device is very dangerous. How can a device tell our owners that we are nowhere to be found for them to accuse us of tampering with the product we carry? We want the devices to be removed,” Clement Ampadu said.
However, Minister of Energy, Mathew Opoku Prempeh who was on the same show debunked the allegations saying the tracking device doesn’t emit any form of radiation to cause cancer or any diseases the group is claiming.
“These devices have been used by a lot of people in this country. I have never heard of such claims before. Tracking devices do not even emit radiation. There is nowhere in the world that tracking devices have been said to give sickness. It cannot be true.” he replied.
Yesterday, Cabinet approved the lifting of a ban on building new LPG stations, a key demand of the Tanker Drivers. It is not clear if that one demand being met will be enough to have them rescind their strike which is causing fuel shortages nationwide.
