Dr Prince Marfo, the resident accident unit doctor at Nsawam Government hospital has confirmed that a total of four people have passed on, and seven others were still in a coma as at 8 pm, yesterday.
Dr Marfo speaking on Obome FM, a radio station in Obregyima further stated that they were in the process of referring three critically injured from the seven to the Korle Bu Teaching hospital for immediate medical care.
Out of the seven critically injured victims, three were on oxygen while the other four were all in what could be referred as deep coma. “We have made provisions to have the three victims on oxygen to be transported by three ambulances so they can be taken care of since their cases are extremely critical and need an advanced team of surgeons to operate and save them, but the other four, we can manage them here,” the doctor added.
When questioned on the nature of the surviving victims, the doctor narrated that, the four people who were confirmed dead as of last night, were all dead when they got to the hospital, and nothing could have been done to save their lives. One woman was with a three-month-old baby, and both the woman and the baby were all confirmed dead on arrival at the emergency unit of the medical facility.
The other two were both men within their thirties to forties, and neither of them survived the accident. Both men seemed to have been in the front seats of the vehicle at the time of the accident. It is reported that had the two survived the accident, their legs would have been amputated because of the bad shape they were in during the accident.
Medics at the hospital have said that most of the persons who were involved in the accident were brought to the facility in good shape with only some few bruises on the hands and legs. Some of them were discharged on Monday afternoon because of their minor injuries and have been advised to return to the hospital for further examination in a week time.
According to medics, the week period given to the injured persons is to allow them go through recovery with the hope that if they have internal health issues, those issues would have manifested for the medics to see.
The doctor was updating the public on the health conditions of the injured victims of an accident that took place on Sunday afternoon on the Obregyima highway near Suhum. The accident claimed four lives; a nursing mother, a three-month-old baby, and two men. The accident reportedly occurred after one of the vehicles involved in the accident tried overtaking a vehicle which was ahead of it as reported by persons who claim they were eyewitnesses to the incident.
A Mercedes sprinter with registration number GG-3245-20 was driving from Accra to Kumasi when the car made a stopover at Nsawam to pick up some passengers. The driver is said to have realized that he was not getting passengers heading to his direction and therefore proceeded to change his mind from transporting passengers from Nsawam to Kumasi and instead chose to transport passengers from Nsawam to Suhum.
On reaching a portion of the Obregyima township, a van attempted to overtake a sprinter bus which was ahead of it. The action of the van subsequently resulted in the accident with the driver of the van currently in police custody helping with investigation.
The driver of the van somehow survived the accident while four persons on the sprinter bus unfortunately died after it veered off the road and somersaulted two times before landing in the middle of the highway. An unidentified nursing mother together with her baby reportedly died on the spot. Two other persons who were in the front seat if the sprinter bus died while being transported to the Nsawam Government Hospital.
The driver of the sprinter bus was among the critically injured persons and was on oxygen at the time of filing this story and is expected to be transported to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
