The Upper West Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of a 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunateh, to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a seven-year-old boy in Wa.
According to a police press release dated July 23, 2026, the conviction was secured through the Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) after a full trial at the Wa High Court.
Police said the suspect was arrested on January 20, 2026, following a report made by the victim’s mother. The incident reportedly occurred three days earlier, on January 17, 2026.
Following the complaint, investigators immediately launched investigations and referred the child to a medical facility for examination while also providing psychosocial support. The accused was subsequently remanded into police custody after his arraignment before the Wa High Court.
On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Justice Osei-Wusu Antwi found the accused guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and pledged to continue pursuing all reported cases of child abuse as well as sexual and gender-based violence.
The Command also urged parents, guardians, caregivers and the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of abuse to the nearest police station for immediate action.
