President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today, May 6, 2021 accepted the nomination of Kissi Agyebeng as the next Special Prosecutor after Martin Amidu exited office months ago.
In a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, President Akufo-Addo on April 29, 2021 sought the approval of Parliament for the appointment.
Martin Amidu was nominated by President Akufo-Addo as Special Prosecutor and was subsequently approved by Parliament in 2018. On November 16, 2020 President Akufo-Addo accepted the resignation from the office of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor in accordance with section 13(8) of the Office of Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), The President is required to appoint a replacement within six months of the position becoming vacant.
In line with replacing Martin Amidu, the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on April 16, 2021, nominated Mr. Agyebeng, under section 13(3) of Act 959, to the President for consideration as the second occupant of the Office of Special Prosecutor.
Mr. Kissi Agyebeng was called to the Bar in October 2003 and holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from Dalhousie University and Cornell Law School. He has been a Criminal Law lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon.
President deems the nominee for the office of the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng who has also engaged in private law practice as being eminently qualified to become the country’s Special Prosecutor.
President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that Parliament will expedite the confirmation process of Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, so he can assume the position without delay.
