The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man suspected of operating a romance scam that allegedly targeted women through false marriage promises, blackmail and fraudulent business deals.
The suspect, Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng, is accused of posing as a pastor who conducted online church services on Instagram. According to preliminary police investigations, he allegedly convinced women that God had revealed they were destined to become his wives, gained their trust by meeting their families and presenting them with promise rings.
Police say the suspect later obtained intimate images from some of the victims and allegedly used the images to blackmail them into sending him money.
Investigators further revealed that Kwarteng allegedly introduced some victims to what he claimed was a car tyre business, collecting thousands of dollars from them under the pretext of shipping and clearing containers of tyres before reportedly cutting off communication.
The Police also allege that the suspect shared intimate images of some victims with his wife, Sally Akosua Amoasah, who is accused of threatening the victims.
So far, seven victims have formally reported the matter, with investigations indicating that the alleged offences date back to 2021.
The two suspects have been arraigned before Accra Circuit Court 1 on charges including conspiracy to commit crime, defrauding by false pretences, and non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
The court remanded Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng into Police custody. He is expected to reappear before the court on August 6, 2026. Sally Akosua Amoasah was granted bail.
The Ghana Police Service says it continues to receive complaints from other possible victims and has urged anyone who may have experienced similar incidents involving the suspect to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations.
