Preparations have commenced for the construction of a new 50,000 capacity Olympic Stadium for the 2023 All Africa Games in Ghana.
The stadium, which is expected to be sited at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region will cost an estimated $200 million, and will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament.
A nine- member Local Organizing Committee was yesterday inaugurated at the Jubilee House to spearhead the country’s organization of the Africa games in 2023.
The committee is chaired by renowned journalist and lecturer, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare, Reks Brobbey, an Olympian, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, adviser to the Minister of Youth & Sport, Ms. Eva Okyere, a legal practitioner, Ghana Olympic Committee Chairman Ben Nunoo Mensah, Dan Kweku Yeboah as members.
Dr. Owusu Ansah will serve as Chief Operating Officer and Reks Brobbey as Deputy Chief Operations Officer.
They were sworn in at the Jubilee House on Monday by the President HE Nana Akufo-Addo and urged them to do a great job so Ghana can host a successful African Games.
“I’m happy that land has been secured to construct the necessary facilities for the games and the procurement process to engage the contractor is ongoing,” President Akufo-Addo said during the inauguration of the LOC.
“The facilities to be constructed include a 50,000 capacity Olympic stadium complex, multi-purpose sports halls for all indoor sports, aquatic centers for swimming and tennis courts,” he said.
The President also indicated that the facility will be converted into a University for Sports and Development after the tournament.
The 13th edition of the Africa Games, formerly known as the All African Games would involve 54 participating countries and 25 sporting disciplines.
