Players of Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have raised concerns over outstanding financial commitments and welfare issues ahead of their continued participation in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a statement issued collectively by the players, they said they remain proud to represent Ghana and committed to the national team despite challenges surrounding payments and player welfare.
Among the issues raised are outstanding bonuses, including the Egypt 2025 bonus, the WAFCON qualification bonus, group-stage bonuses and unpaid per diem allowances.
The players also called for improved management support for players and officials, as well as greater attention to their mental health and overall well-being.
The Black Queens said they dedicate significant time and make personal sacrifices to represent Ghana, stressing that their request is for “transparency, accountability, fairness and respect.”
The players further noted that the Minister responsible for sports attended only their first official training session, where the President was also present.
“Apart from that occasion, we have largely had to rely on ourselves, our teammates and our technical staff throughout this journey,” the players said, while expressing appreciation to their technical and support staff for standing by them.
They insisted that financial commitments to national team players should be honoured on time and that the welfare of players should be treated as a priority.
The Black Queens emphasised that their statement was not intended to create conflict or disrespect any individual or institution, but rather to seek a more professional and supportive environment for the team.
Despite the concerns, the players said they have continued to work hard, remain focused and represent Ghana with pride.
They are therefore appealing to the Ministry of Sports and other relevant decision-makers to engage with them and work towards a swift resolution of the outstanding issues.
The players concluded by saying: “We deserve the same commitment and support that we give to our country.”
