Workplace revenge can destroy careers and productivity – Rev. Benjamin Boateng

Rev. Benjamin Boateng urges youth to correct misplaced priorities and reclaim their future

Revenge in the workplace can have consequences far beyond the initial disagreement, damaging relationships, undermining productivity and ultimately hurting the person seeking retaliation, Reverend Benjamin Boateng has cautioned.

According to him, unresolved grievances between employees, colleagues or workers and their superiors can gradually develop into acts of revenge, creating an unhealthy working environment.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme, Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Boateng said workplace retaliation often begins by destroying trust among colleagues.

He explained that once workers begin to act out of spite, teamwork suffers because individuals become reluctant to share information or cooperate with one another.

Rev. Boateng noted that communication can also deteriorate as misunderstandings increase and colleagues begin to view each other with suspicion rather than working towards common organisational goals.

He further warned that workplace revenge could affect productivity when employees deliberately undermine projects or engage in actions that disrupt operations.

Such behaviour, he said, can shift workers’ attention away from achieving organisational objectives and instead create an environment where personal grievances take precedence over professional responsibilities.

Rev. Boateng also cautioned that revenge can eventually damage the reputation and career prospects of the person seeking to retaliate.

He said colleagues and management may take note of destructive behaviour, potentially affecting future opportunities and professional relationships.

The Reverend stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship between employees and their superiors, saying open communication and mutual understanding can help prevent workplace grievances from escalating.

He encouraged workers to approach workplace conflicts with maturity and forgiveness rather than allowing bitterness and resentment to influence their professional conduct.

According to him, choosing forgiveness does not only help individuals move beyond personal grievances but can also contribute to rebuilding trust and creating a more productive and harmonious workplace.
