We will vote for candidates who will prioritize the Agric sector – Concerned farmers

May 5, 2018 - Paidha, Uganda - A local farmer seen farming his land in late afternoon..Agriculture provides more than 95% of the income for the villagers who live in the villages near the town of Paidha in northwestern Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Out of all the Agriculture products coffee account for more than 60% of their total income, the current rate for coffee is 5000 Shillings (.30 USD) per kg while other products such as avocados and maze worth even less. Over 90% of the local families are living without electricity, and villagers often have to carry water from 2-5 km away from water sources. (Credit Image: © Geovien So/SOPA Images via ZUMA Wire)

The President of the Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana Nana Oboadie has stated the Association will vote for a candidate who will prioritize the Agricultural sector in the country because present and past administrations have neglected the sector to collapse.

Speaking on Plan BFM’s late afternoon show EBAANISEN hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Nana Oboadie stressed on the urgent need for government intervention to help revamp the sector.

He said the importation of poultry products amounted to approximately GH¢868.8 million, about 7.7% of total imports in 2023 which the Association said the high cost of borrowing makes it difficult for farmers to remain sustainable amidst the increasing market demand.

He emphasized the challenges faced by farmers who heavily rely on egg production to sustain their businesses.

“Most poultry farmers depend solely on egg production to sustain our business. Unfortunately, along the line when you lose your birds and you are not getting any support from the government it becomes so difficult to be in business.”

“This is because most farmers have borrowed money from banks with very high interest rates. This puts the farmers in a very desperate situation,” he added.

He argued that, instead of the leadership of the country finding solutions to their problems in the agricultural sector, they are milking the country dry.

“We are the industry players but when the government decisions concerning the sector they don’t consult us the farmers, they should leave us alone because we have seen that they can’t manage the sector well, we can manage it ourselves” he fumed.
