A recent statement by the president suggesting that the tenure of office should be extended if the president is capable has ignited a firestorm of discussions and concerns among citizens. The proposal has been met with skepticism, with many arguing that it could lead to abuse of power and undermine democratic institutions.
Speaking in an interview on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Madam Janet Nabla, Founder of the People’s National Party (PNP), weighed in on the debate, stating that extending the term limits would be a bad idea.
“The years should not be extended because they will lag behind, thinking they have enough years ahead of them,” she said.
Nabla also cautioned against reducing the tenure to a single term, arguing that it could lead to reckless behavior by the president.
She emphasized that the current two-term limit should be maintained, warning that any attempts to extend a president’s time in office could lead to misunderstanding and potentially destabilize the country.
The debate on term limits has sparked a national conversation, with citizens and experts weighing the pros and cons of extending or reducing the president’s tenure.
As the discussion continues, one thing is clear: the fate of the country’s democratic institutions hangs in the balance.
Commenting on President Mahama’s administration, she rated him 2 out of 10.
