Two people have died and fourteen others, including a police officer, have sustained gunshot injuries following disturbances at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during celebrations marking the community’s Yam Festival.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the disturbances erupted at the Four Junction at about 5:30 p.m., after the festival programme had ended.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace when a gunshot was heard, leading to the disturbances.
The police said two persons died in the incident, while thirteen others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Wenchi Divisional Police have since restored calm in the area, with security patrols intensified across Nchiraa to prevent any further disturbances.
The Bono Regional Police Command has assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and arrest all persons suspected to have been involved in the incident.
The Command has also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue.
