Two bridges collapse at Ashaiman after heavy rains, roads closed

Two bridges collapse at Ashaiman after heavy rains, roads closed

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has temporarily closed two major road sections following the collapse of two bridges after heavy rainfall in the municipality.

The affected routes are the road from Borla Junction to Community 22 Washing Bay and the stretch from Community 22 to Community 22 Annex, both of which lead to the collapsed bridges.

The Assembly explained that the closures were necessary to prevent loss of life and protect motorists and pedestrians from using unsafe infrastructure that had been weakened by severe erosion caused by the downpour.

According to authorities, the heavy rains destabilised the bridges, causing them to give way and rendering both sections impassable for vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians.

The Assembly’s Works Department is working together with the Department of Urban Roads and Municipal Disaster Prevention teams to assess the damage and begin emergency interventions.

Personnel are currently on-site installing barricades and warning signs to prevent access to the affected areas, while diversion routes are being mapped to guide commuters safely.

Residents and motorists have been urged to strictly avoid the closed roads and comply with all diversion instructions as repair works are expected to commence as soon as possible.

The Assembly has also appealed to the public to desist from dumping waste into drains, warning that blocked drainage systems worsen flooding and contribute to infrastructure collapse during heavy rains.

With further rainfall forecast by meteorological authorities, the Assembly cautioned that continued disregard for proper waste disposal practices could increase the risk of additional flooding and damage to roads and bridges.

The Municipal Assembly assured residents that urgent steps are being taken to restore safe access and strengthen affected infrastructure to prevent future incidents.
