Barring any unforeseen circumstance and any interference by the government, the Coalition of Private Transport Operators is going to park cars any time soon.
The Coalition says its members have already taken this position but are meeting on Monday, November 22 to finalise the decision and then announce to the general public when such a move would take place.
Members of the Coalition scheduled a meeting last Friday to take a decision on the 2022 budget and economic policy of the government as presented by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.
The meeting considered three actions “to submit another petition to the Minister of Transport, to go on strike or to increase transport fares”.
The Coalition of Private Transport Operators consists of Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Association of Tipper Truck Drivers, Harbor Transport Owners, Ghana National Cargo Transport Association, Ghana Committed Drivers Association, Concerned Drivers Association, Digital Drivers, Commercial motorbike riders, popularly referred to as Okada, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, among others.
Giving an update on the meeting on 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Alfred Ocansey on Monday, November 22, the Industrial Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Moro Abass, explained that “our number has increased because some members who were not part of us have joined us and we are meeting this morning and reasonable response will come”.
“Around 12:00 noon, we will be done with the meeting. We keep saying that we do not take an entrenched position but we have already decided on one of the decisions and we will make it known to all by 12 to the general public.”
He added: “We are going to take the decision to embark on our demands. We are not demanding to increase our fares but we have decided to park our cars and we park as long as thy kingdom comes.”
Alhaji Moro indicated that “we have critically examine what we are going to do and I am surprised who is advising the government on transport issues, that up to today government has not responded to our demands”.
He further explained that “we are not going to force any driver union or a driver to join us…but if you are a mature man, and you decide not to support this cause, then it is up to you. We haven’t taken an entrenched decision. We are meeting today to finalize it. If there is no interference or the Transport Minister does not call us again”.
