National Democratic Congress (NDC) member Thomas Ayertey has raised concerns over what he describes as inadequate and questionable marking of Ghanaian Language examination papers, calling for an investigation into the assessment process.
Speaking on Ebaanosen on Plan B FM, hosted by Ohene Kennah, Mr. Ayertey alleged that some teachers and examiners do not pay sufficient attention to students’ scripts, potentially disadvantaging candidates who put significant effort into studying Ghanaian Language.
He questioned why Ghanaian Language continues to face challenges in both teaching and assessment despite being an important component of Ghana’s educational system.
According to Mr. Ayertey, some students’ answers are allegedly poorly assessed or improperly marked, raising concerns about the fairness and accuracy of their final results.
He further cited instances where several candidates from the same school reportedly obtained similarly low marks, despite the large number of students involved. He questioned whether such results always reflect the actual performance of the candidates and called for greater transparency in the marking process.
Mr. Ayertey stressed that students studying Akan, Ga, Gonja and other Ghanaian languages deserve the same level of fairness and attention in examinations as students taking other subjects.
He therefore urged education authorities, teachers, parents and other stakeholders to take a closer look at the teaching and assessment of Ghanaian Language.
He also called for examination scripts to be made available for scrutiny whenever credible concerns are raised, arguing that proper investigations could help determine whether marking irregularities have occurred.
Mr. Ayertey maintained that if the concerns are found to have merit, the necessary corrective measures should be taken to protect students and restore confidence in the assessment of Ghanaian Language examinations.
