The dangers of over-pampering: how it breeds entitlement, selfishness and emotional weakness

The dangers of over-pampering: how it breeds entitlement, selfishness and emotional weakness
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Rev. Michael Yaoo Banson, Resident Pastor of Rehoboth Holy Fire Revival Ministries International, has cautioned against excessive pampering of children and individuals, warning that it can negatively affect their character, relationships and ability to handle life’s challenges.

According to him, while love, encouragement and care are essential in raising individuals, too much pampering can create unrealistic expectations and develop an unhealthy sense of entitlement.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapɔ Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Banson explained that over-pampered individuals often expect special treatment wherever they find themselves.

He noted that such people usually struggle to accept criticism, resist discipline and find it difficult to adapt to rules or situations that require patience and sacrifice. He said they may develop the mindset that they deserve preferential treatment because of the way they were raised.

Rev. Banson further explained that excessive pampering can promote selfishness and an entitlement mentality. Using an example of a child who regularly receives GH₵500 from a parent, he said the child may feel disappointed or angry if the amount is reduced to GH₵300, rather than appreciating the support provided.

He stressed that this happens when individuals begin to view privileges as rights instead of gifts or acts of kindness.

The pastor also pointed out that over-pampered people often struggle with resilience, have difficulty handling challenges, blame others for their problems and constantly seek validation and rewards. He added that some narcissistic behaviours can be linked to excessive pampering during childhood.

Rev. Banson urged parents and guardians to strike a balance between showing love and enforcing discipline, responsibility and accountability to help raise emotionally strong, independent and responsible adults.
