Ten Busted Over Lottery Fraud

Court Accounts officer Fails To Account For ¢18K Paid For Bailiff Services – A-G

At least 10 individuals have been arrested for operating a lottery scam in Ghana, the director-general of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) Sammi Awuku has said.

The suspects were arrested by a team of personnel from national security, police and officials from the National Lottery Authority following an intelligence-led operation.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show Friday (4 February), Awuku said the suspects are being processed for court.

“Yesterday three people walked into the NLA premises saying that I have been communicating with them and they have been scammed. You know these activities are very worrying.

“I am happy to also announce that a combined operation of the national security, led by the National Signal Bureau, the NLA team and that of the police service have made an arrest of over ten people currently in the custody of the police and they are being processed for court. I am sure at the right time the police will come out with more details,” Awuku said.

He added: “These people were operating from the remote part of our country. They were living good, they were arrested with several sim cards, and where they can also fake voices, very sophisticated operations, you go to their rooms and per the footages that I have seen they were living like Arabian kings at the expense of people’s misery.”

The NLA boss advised the public to be weary of the practice of such unscrupulous persons.

“We keep educating the public but people keep falling victims, and to some extent I think it underscores the greed in the system. We want to put it out that nobody has access to NLA numbers.”
