Tema East NDC condemns the killing of two civilians during the Kpelejoo Festival

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), of the Tema East Constituency has condemned the killing of two civilians at Tema Newtown during the Kpelejoo festival on Friday, April 12, 2024, the people of Tema Manhean took to the principal streets of Tema Newtown to climax the celebration of the 2024 Annual Kplejoo Festival.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s late afternoon show EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, the Tema East Constituency Communications Officer of the NDC Alhassan Bowsa Meisuna said during the festivities, a vehicle from the Eastern Naval Command with naval personnel drove through the crowd, leading to a misunderstanding between the jubilant civilians and the Navy personnel.

He said despite their training in crowd management, the Navy personnel had a brief confrontation with the unarmed civilians and, instead of acting professionally, they resorted to shooting indiscriminately into the crowd. This led to the death of two innocent individuals and injuries to about three others.

The two unarmed civilians, Christopher Amo and Joseph Adjetey Adjei died instantly at the scene before they could be transported to the Tema General Hospital.

Furthermore, one other civilian who had bullet pellets penetrate his thigh, along with others who sustained severe injuries, were treated and discharged.

This unfortunate incident, unprecedented in the history of Tema Manhean, calls for strong condemnation of the inhumane and unprofessional response from the security personnel, which resulted in these needless deaths.
