Sunyani Central Prison Undertakes Large-Scale Farming To Boost Inmate Welfare

Sunyani Central Prison Undertakes Large-Scale Farming To Boost Inmate Welfare

The Sunyani Central Prison is implementing a large-scale farming project to ensure nutritious meals and improve the overall welfare of inmates.

Superintendent Dennis Peasah, Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, explained that officers and selected inmates are participating in the initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Thompson Otsyokpo, the Bono Regional Prisons Commander.

Speaking to Adom News in Sunyani, Supt Peasah said the team has cleared and ploughed a once-dense forest surrounding the prison, transforming it into productive farmland. The project currently features maize, cabbage, oil palm plantations, and other crops.

He added that the initiative has fostered teamwork, resilience, and responsibility among inmates, who collaborate with officers in planting and maintaining the farm.

Supt Peasah noted that the project complements the “Director General’s Kitchen Initiative,” which mandates all prison facilities to become self-reliant in feeding inmates. “By growing our own food, we will be able to improve the quality and value of meals for inmates,” he said.

He further explained that the project reduces operational costs, equips inmates with practical agricultural skills, and supports their rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
