NPP Supporters Nearly Assault Asiedu Nketiah At Ernest Kumi’s 40-day Observance

NDC campaign van attacked by NPP supporters in Okaikoi South

What started as a solemn observance for the late former Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, almost turned chaotic moments when the National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and his entourage entered the Wenchi Durbar grounds to pay homage and commiserate with the bereaved family.

Visibly angry women and some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) attempted to physically assault the NDC chairman and his security detail.

The security detail, together with some party members accompanying the NDC National Chairman, fiercely resisted the attempts till some personnel from the Ghana Police Service drew closer to provide reinforcement.

It took the intervention of the MP for New Juaben South, Micheal Kofi Okyere Baafi, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and the former Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Kingston Akomeng Kissi to calm their angry supporters and clear the path for Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and his entourage to move to where the former President, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and his Vice Dr Mahamudu Bawumia were seated to pay homage to the former states man.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, who described the scene as unfortunate in an interview with Channel One News, said going forward, the NDC will revise their notes in their dealings with the NPP.

“This is worrying also because in the back of the conversation to eschew violence, look at what they have done at a funeral. We have taken a cue out of it and it will redefine our relationship going into the election,” he said.
