In a tragic incident, a 12-year-old girl named Amanda Tei Martey, a fourth-grade student at Suhum Newtown Presby Basic School, lost her life early Monday morning around 5 am. She was crushed to death by a cargo truck while on her way to dispose of refuse. The accident took place shortly after the Suhum Overpass on the Accra to Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region.

Amanda was crossing the road to reach a nearby dumping site when the accident occurred, and she was killed instantly. The truck driver, whose identity remains unknown, was operating a cargo truck with the registration number GN 126-18. The truck was fully loaded with Ginger from Ahafo-Goaso in the Ahafo Region, en route to Accra. As the driver descended the Overpass towards Accra, he collided with Amanda, claiming her life.

The driver, traveling at a high speed, stated that he did not see the young girl crossing the road due to the absence of street lights on the Overpass. The impact of the accident was severe, resulting in the mutilation of Amanda’s body. The police had to utilize a shovel to carefully collect the remains, which were then placed in a polythene bag. Subsequently, the body was taken to the Suhum Hospital morgue for preservation.

At present, the driver is under Police custody and cooperating with the ongoing investigation. This unfortunate incident highlights the need for proper road safety measures and lighting infrastructure to prevent such accidents and protect the lives of pedestrians, especially children. The loss of young Amanda is deeply saddening, and our thoughts go out to her family and the community affected by this tragic event.
