Sokode Sec Tech shutdown over clash between students and youth

Sokode Sec Tech shutdown over clash between students and youth
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Sokode Senior High Technical School has been temporarily closed following violent clashes between students and community members in Sokode, near Ho, in the Volta Region. The decision was announced by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, after a tour of the affected areas, including the school and the community.

The disturbances reportedly began when a student of the school allegedly snatched a mobile phone at a bar near the school. In an attempt to retrieve the phone, some youth from the town pursued him onto the school premises. However, the situation escalated when students, allegedly wielding cutlasses, repelled the youth.

Later that night, some students allegedly stormed the town, vandalizing properties in retaliation. In response, angry townsfolk mobilized at dawn on February 23, 2025, and stormed the school, causing damage to school property.

The confrontation nearly resulted in a bloody clash, but the timely intervention of the Regional Police Command helped restore order.

Given the rising tensions between the school and the community, authorities, led by the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Mr. James Gunu, decided to temporarily shut down the institution to prevent further violence and allow calm to be restored.

The Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, has urged both students and residents to remain calm while security agencies work to address the situation and prevent any further escalation.
