A member of the NDC in the Tema Central Constituency, Sam Anoon, has criticised calls by some members of the NPP urging Ghanaians to boycott the upcoming National General Cleaning Days, describing such appeals as unhelpful in the wake of the recent floods.
His comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration of Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days across the seven regions affected by the recent flooding.
The two-day exercise, to be carried out under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and themed “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods,” aims to mobilise citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment, and reduce the risk of further flooding ahead of the expected heavy rains.
The President has directed all government appointees including Ministers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Chief Executive Officers, and heads of public institutions to lead cleanup activities in their respective communities.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem programme with Kofi Sekyi, Sam Anoon urged all Ghanaians to put politics aside and participate in the exercise, insisting that keeping communities clean is a shared responsibility.
He also issued a strong warning to residents in his area, stating that shop owners who refuse to take part in the cleanup exercise risk having their shops locked during the operation.
Sam Anoon further accused the previous NPP administration of failing to implement effective measures to tackle flooding during its eight years in office, arguing that the current cleanup initiative is a necessary step towards preventing future flood disasters.
