Two suspected armed robbers have been remanded in police custody for allegedly attacking passengers at Mallam Junction in Accra.

However, a third suspect, who had been arrested with the others and was at the police station at Weija, slipped through the police grip during a toilet break.

The accused persons, Stephen Amoani, aged 42, and Osei Antwi, aged 30, were arraigned before the Weija Circuit Court on October 20, 2025, in connection with the robbery that occurred in the early hours of October 16, 2025.

Both men pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to them in Twi and have been remanded to reappear on November 10, 2025.

Their alleged accomplice, Kwame Mike, escaped from police custody on October 16 after requesting to use the washroom.

The officer who escorted him has since been detained and is assisting with administrative investigations into the security breach.

According to the police, the incident began when personnel from the Amanfro District Command, acting on intelligence, moved to Mallam Junction where four men were said to be robbing passengers.

Upon seeing the police, the suspects attempted to flee.

Three of them, Amoani, Antwi, and Mike were arrested, while a fourth suspect, identified as Kofi Sammy, who was reportedly armed with a pump-action gun, managed to escape.

A search conducted after the arrests led to the recovery of several items.

Police found a cutlass hidden on Antwi, a black Honda CR-V with trade plate number DV 3145–2025, three yellow gallons of akpeteshie, cash amounting to GH₵12,055, and three mobile phones: a Samsung A05, an iPhone 16, and an Itel Android phone. The police believe the items were stolen during the robbery.

Efforts are underway to rearrest both Mike and Sammy. All retrieved items have been kept for use as evidence, and the seized vehicle remains in police custody as investigations continue.

In a press statement issued on October 23, 2025, the Accra Regional Police Command said it remains determined to protect the lives and property of residents.

The Command also appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist in locating the two fugitives and in preventing future crimes.

The escape of the suspect has renewed concerns about detention procedures within the Ghana Police Service, especially regarding the supervision of suspects in custody.
